I am so excited to share today’s post with you! If you’re stopping by from Run to Radiance, welcome (if not, make sure to hop over and check out her tradition!). There are always topics that I want to write about, and sometimes it’s hard to find ways to fit them in- they’re too big to be a “blurb”. This “Christmas Traditions” blog hop that was so kindly organized by Rachel of Like a Saturday is such a perfect excuse to write about one of the biggest parts of the holiday season in our family: The Family Advent Calendar.
The beautiful train in the photo above is actually our advent calendar, and was given to us by my Mom six years ago now. It is probably made for daily candy or another little trinket, but my Mom came up with such a creative way to experience the holiday season!
In each little drawer or cubby there is a note. The note corresponds with a small wrapped box or gift bag or treat, and helps us find the correct one for the day. Each gift is something that helps us get in the holiday spirit as a family, whether it’s a craft, a Christmas book, movie, an ornament for our tree, or candy. It gives us the perfect opportunity to do things together and truly make the most of our holiday season! The boys absolutely love it, they look forward to seeing what each day’s surprise will be. Their favorite are the crafts! My favorite are the books- we have quite the Christmas library, and Christmas books are so sentimental and fun to read together in front of the fire!
The boys Christmas crafting after breakfast – hence the crumbs ;)
I wanted to use this post as an opportunity to recognize how much work and heart my Mom puts into these, and to thank her! She also makes one for each family in our extended family with young children, so multiply this by five or six. She does it because she loves Christmas, and especially loves the meaning behind the holiday, and has definitely succeeded in helping us enjoy the season to the fullest. Thanks for all that you do, Mom!
Make sure to stop by Upcycled Treasures, which is the next stop on the tour!
